Background of the Study
Sedentary lifestyles, characterized by prolonged periods of physical inactivity, have emerged as a major risk factor for chronic diseases such as diabetes. In Yobe State, rapid urbanization and changes in occupational patterns have led to an increase in sedentary behaviors, particularly among middle-aged and older adults (Bello, 2023). With the shift from manual labor to more sedentary office jobs, coupled with lifestyle choices that favor inactivity, the prevalence of type 2 diabetes is on the rise. Sedentary behavior is associated with reduced insulin sensitivity, impaired glucose metabolism, and increased body fat, all of which contribute to the development of diabetes (Aliyu, 2023).

In Yobe State, the growing burden of diabetes poses significant challenges for the healthcare system, which is already strained by limited resources and a high prevalence of other non-communicable diseases. The interplay between a sedentary lifestyle and poor dietary habits exacerbates the risk, creating a vicious cycle where inactivity leads to obesity, which in turn increases the risk of diabetes. Despite the well-established link between sedentary behavior and diabetes, there is a paucity of localized research that quantifies this relationship and identifies the specific factors contributing to sedentary lifestyles in Yobe State.

This study seeks to evaluate the influence of sedentary lifestyles on the prevalence of diabetes in Yobe State. By combining quantitative data from health surveys with qualitative interviews, the research will examine how lifestyle patterns, environmental factors, and socio-economic conditions contribute to diabetes risk. The findings are expected to provide critical insights into the behavioral determinants of diabetes, thereby informing public health initiatives and intervention programs designed to promote physical activity and healthier lifestyles (Ibrahim, 2024).

Statement of the Problem
In Yobe State, diabetes prevalence has been steadily increasing, a trend closely linked to the adoption of sedentary lifestyles. Many individuals, particularly in urban settings, spend extended periods engaged in sedentary activities such as sitting at work or watching television, which contributes to obesity and impaired glucose metabolism. Despite the clear health risks associated with physical inactivity, there is limited awareness and insufficient public health strategies to address sedentary behavior (Aliyu, 2023). The lack of adequate recreational facilities, coupled with changing work patterns, leaves many residents with few opportunities to engage in regular physical exercise, thereby exacerbating the risk of diabetes.

The problem is further complicated by socio-economic factors, as individuals with lower incomes often face additional barriers to maintaining an active lifestyle. Inadequate urban planning and limited access to safe public spaces discourage physical activity, while poor dietary habits compound the health risks. Consequently, the combined effects of a sedentary lifestyle and unhealthy eating behaviors contribute to the rising incidence of diabetes, placing a heavy burden on the healthcare system (Bello, 2023).

Without a thorough understanding of the relationship between sedentary behavior and diabetes in Yobe State, public health authorities are challenged in designing effective interventions. This study aims to fill this gap by systematically assessing how sedentary lifestyles influence diabetes prevalence and by identifying actionable strategies to promote physical activity and reduce diabetes risk.

Objectives of the Study

  • To measure the prevalence of sedentary behaviors among adults in Yobe State.
  • To evaluate the association between sedentary lifestyles and diabetes prevalence.
  • To propose interventions that encourage increased physical activity and healthy behaviors.

Research Questions

  • What is the prevalence of sedentary behavior in Yobe State?
  • How does sedentary behavior correlate with the incidence of diabetes?
  • What interventions can effectively reduce sedentary lifestyles and diabetes risk?

Research Hypotheses

  • H1: Higher levels of sedentary behavior are significantly associated with increased diabetes prevalence.
  • H2: Inadequate access to recreational facilities contributes to sedentary lifestyles.
  • H3: Interventions promoting physical activity will reduce diabetes risk among sedentary individuals.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on adult populations in urban areas of Yobe State. Data will be collected through lifestyle surveys, medical records, and interviews. Limitations include self-reporting biases and the cross-sectional nature of the study.

Definitions of Terms

  • Sedentary Lifestyle: A lifestyle characterized by low physical activity and prolonged sitting.
  • Diabetes: A chronic condition that affects the body’s ability to regulate blood sugar.
  • Prevalence: The proportion of individuals in a population who have a specific condition.
